The earliest forms of ceramic vessels were likely created during the Neolithic period (10,000-2,000 BCE) when people began to settle in one place and engage in agriculture. Simple containers, such as bowls and jars, were hand-formed and sun-dried or fired at low temperatures. ("A History of Pottery" by Emmanuel Cooper)

People started using clay for utensils in the Xia Dynasty in China 6,000 years ago. At that time, due to the backwardness of human's use of fire, only pottery could be made.
